The Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 8500.01, assigns Information Assurance responsibilities to Defense Agencies; this guidance assigns the National Security Agency (NSA) the responsibility to determine procedures and write policy for the complete, 100% sanitization of information. Products that pass their evaluation are then listed in various NSA Evaluated Products Lists.
In addition, many DoD components as well as government agencies write their own information assurance policies; these regulations refer back to the NSA/CSS for guidance because they are the subject matter experts and write the official guidance for secure information sanitization and disposal.
Using an NSA/CSS approved product takes the guesswork out of choosing; you do not have to trust a manufacturer’s word alone.
